Emirates unveils Dh8.8 million telemedicine system to save lives at 40,000 feet
New cutting-edge station enables real-time medical support from ground-based doctors

DUBAI: Emirates has partnered with Parsys Telemedicine to introduce an advanced inflight medical solution, ensuring passengers receive high-quality medical care while airborne.
The airline has invested over Dh8.8 million in developing and deploying a state-of-the-art telemedicine station designed to improve emergency medical response. This pioneering system, featuring real-time communication with ground-based doctors, will be rolled out across 300 aircraft in the coming years.
The collaboration is set to redefine aviation healthcare, equipping Emirates' cabin crew with the most sophisticated tools to manage medical situations effectively.
Advanced inflight medical technology
The new telemedicine station includes high-definition video conferencing, secure data transmission, and a 12-Leads Telecardia ECG, allowing Emirates’ crew to provide swift and accurate medical assistance. The system comprises the Parsys Telemedicine Kit and the Parsys Cloud, enabling seamless communication between cabin crew and Emirates’ Ground Medical Support team, which operates round the clock from the airline’s Dubai headquarters.
The portable Parsys Telemedicine Kit is equipped with a pulse oximeter, thermometer, blood pressure monitor, glucometer, and electrocardiogram (ECG). These devices automatically relay passenger vitals to the Medcapture device via Bluetooth, eliminating manual note-taking and ensuring accuracy. The Medcapture device, a specially designed tablet, integrates Emirates' medical protocols, facilitating efficient data collection and direct consultation with medical professionals on the ground.
Real-time emergency response
The system has already proven its effectiveness in real-world scenarios. During a recent flight to Lyon, an elderly passenger suffered a cardiovascular emergency, leading to a drastic drop in oxygen levels. Emirates' trained crew promptly provided oxygen and used the Parsys MedCapture device to transmit vital readings to the Ground Medical Support team.
Through the Parsys Cloud, ground-based doctors assessed the situation in real time, offering immediate guidance to the crew. The seamless coordination allowed for swift and informed medical intervention, stabilising the passenger before the flight landed safely. This rapid response capability underscores the impact of Emirates' investment in telemedicine, significantly enhancing passenger safety.
Medical training
Emirates ensures its cabin crew receive rigorous medical training, equipping them with the skills to handle a wide range of inflight emergencies. New recruits undergo an intensive eight-week ab-initio training programme covering safety, service, and medical response. The telemedicine system is introduced through a blended learning approach, combining e-learning with hands-on practical sessions.
Crew members are extensively trained to manage situations such as allergic reactions, breathing difficulties, sudden illnesses, and even childbirth. They receive instruction in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), Automated External Defibrillator (AED) usage, and severe allergy management. Advanced simulation technology ensures crew members are well-prepared for high-pressure medical scenarios.
Annual recurrent training reinforces these skills, with cabin crew required to complete a comprehensive refresher course, including a 1.5-hour online module, a two-hour practical session, and flight simulation exercises. Beyond technical training, Emirates also focuses on the psychological aspects of emergency response, ensuring crew members can provide compassionate care while maintaining composure.
Emirates’ commitment to crew well-being extends beyond training. The airline provides post-incident psychological support through its Employee Assistance Programme, Peer Support service, and Sehaty – a dedicated wellness initiative.
